GULF WAR ILLNESS
There is a reason 100,000 plus veterans came back sick after serving in Desert Storm - nerve agent. We were exposed to a lot of things (see Illness Chart), but the one that keeps coming up is nerve agent. The way it works and effects people causes different people to have different symptoms, so for a long time doctors were confused and called it Gulf War Syndrome. As we learned more, the name also changed.
I am a member of the VA Reseach Advisory Committee on Gulf War Illness which meets three times a year in Washington DC to figure out why veterans got sick and then to explore possible treatment options. The Illness Chart I developed flows from exposures, to symptoms, and then to treatments. I apologize if it is a little dated, because I haven't been to a meeting in the last year, and it is updated at meetings.
My unit (1-67 Armor, 2nd "Tiger" Brigade, 2nd Armored Division) was exposed to nerve agent, and after lots of investigation, it could only have been VX. The details are in my VX Exposure Briefing attached here.
